Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die rails against AI in style

Engadget

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2026 is Feb. 25 Valve's Steam Machine: Everything we know Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die rails against AI in style It's not particularly deep, but it sure is fun. Sam Rockwell (center) and crew in Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die. You've seen this movie before: A disheveled man (Sam Rockwell) busts into a restaurant, threatening to blow up the joint unless a crew of people joins him. Like, he's been through this countless times before, and he immediately starts recounting otherwise unknowable details to convince the diner patrons. Like, he's from the future -- the timely twist in is that, rather than a world-ending virus, he needs help preventing a humanity-ending AI from being born.

Yosemite's glowing, golden waterfall is flowing again

Popular Science

Environment Yosemite's glowing, golden waterfall is flowing again The annual natural phenomenon event is expected to last until February 26. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. As if California's Yosemite National Park wasn't magical enough, its famous El Capitan rock formation is graced with an exhilarating phenomenon every February. The Horsetail Fall--a waterfall that falls across the formation's eastern side--can take on an otherworldly gleam during the latter part of the month. During those gorgeous moments, the water flow looks like a stream of gold hurtling down the rock face, and it's hard to believe that it's just nature doing its thing.

How Well Do LLMs Identify Cultural Unity in Diversity?

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Much work on the cultural awareness of large language models (LLMs) focuses on the models' sensitivity to geo-cultural diversity. However, in addition to cross-cultural differences, there also exists common ground across cultures. For instance, a bridal veil in the United States plays a similar cultural-relevant role as a honggaitou in China. In this study, we introduce a benchmark dataset CUNIT for evaluating decoder-only LLMs in understanding the cultural unity of concepts. Specifically, CUNIT consists of 1,425 evaluation examples building upon 285 traditional cultural-specific concepts across 10 countries. Based on a systematic manual annotation of cultural-relevant features per concept, we calculate the cultural association between any pair of cross-cultural concepts. Built upon this dataset, we design a contrastive matching task to evaluate the LLMs' capability to identify highly associated cross-cultural concept pairs. We evaluate 3 strong LLMs, using 3 popular prompting strategies, under the settings of either giving all extracted concept features or no features at all on CUNIT Interestingly, we find that cultural associations across countries regarding clothing concepts largely differ from food. Our analysis shows that LLMs are still limited to capturing cross-cultural associations between concepts compared to humans. Moreover, geo-cultural proximity shows a weak influence on model performance in capturing cross-cultural associations.

The US Senate Wants to Reign In AI. Good Luck With That

WIRED

AI is defining the future, even as many US senators struggle to understand it in the present. "It would have been better if it had been held in a room where the acoustics were better," Senator Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, says of a much-anticipated--if overdue--All-Senators AI briefing orchestrated by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer earlier this month. The shoddy acoustics of the first of three closed-door meetings--kept private to insulate senators from electoral pressure to perform before cameras--were far from Grassley's biggest complaint. "I would say that the next [one] will be more valuable, because this was a very general overview," he says. As AI expands its foothold across industries, households, and legislative bodies--including amongst some at the Capitol itself--Congress is under pressure to act quickly, even though many lawmakers still don't know what they're being asked to regulate.

There's now an open source alternative to ChatGPT, but good luck running it โ€ข TechCrunch

The first open-source equivalent of OpenAI's ChatGPT has arrived, but good luck running it on your laptop -- or at all. This week, Philip Wang, the developer responsible for reverse-engineering closed-sourced AI systems including Meta's Make-A-Video, released PaLM RLHF, a text-generating model that behaves similarly to ChatGPT. The system combines PaLM, a large language model from Google, and a technique called Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback -- RLHF, for short -- to create a system that can accomplish pretty much any task that ChatGPT can, including drafting emails and suggesting computer code. That is to say, the system hasn't been trained on the example data from the web necessary for it to actually work. Downloading PaLM RLHF won't magically install a ChatGPT-like experience -- that would require compiling gigabytes of text from which the model can learn and finding hardware beefy enough to handle the training workload.

You could get a Black Friday deal on Nintendo Switch, but finding new OLED version, good luck

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

The Nintendo Switch console is about to make history, becoming the video game maker's best-selling console ever. But if you want to buy a new Nintendo Switch OLED model to help put it over the top, they are still tough to find. In the U.S., Nintendo sold 314,000 Switch OLED units during the month of October (the console was released Oct. 8), Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser said, citing sales data from The NPD Group. Overall, Nintendo sold 711,000 Nintendo Switch systems during the month. Nintendo sold 3% more Switch units in October 2020, he said.

Looking For An AI Ethicist? Good Luck

#artificialintelligence

As more companies adopt AI, the risks posed by AI are becoming clearer to business leaders. That is driving many companies to hire AI ethicists to help guide them through an ethical minefield. But just as data scientists proved to be as elusive as unicorns, qualified AI ethics are also in very short supply, says Beena Ammanath, executive director of Deloitte's AI Institute. "We've seen different models evolving. It's still very nascent," Ammanath tells Datanami.
